About the programme

Learn the unique skill of Engineering Fabrication with our flexible, four-year apprenticeship programme. Study a range of courses from machining processes, engineering core skills, calculations and drawing, and welding and fabrication - all while gaining valuable, practical work experience.聽

Classes are flexible and are taught by qualified professional tradespeople. We have a range of learning options available for this programme, including day release study, night classes, block courses and online learning.聽

When you graduate, you will be confident and capable of working independently as Engineering Fabrication tradesperson in your chosen discipline within engineering fabrication. Specific roles for each of the strands may include:

  • Heavy Fabrication strand 鈥 Fitter Welder, Boilermaker
  • Light Fabrication strand 鈥 Sheetmetal worker

Note: This programme is worth 270 credits across 4 years part-time, however if you have already successfully completed the , you will only be required to study part-time across 3 years, and the credits awarded will be 190.

Academic Requirements

To be admitted to this course, applicants must meet the following requirements:
鈥 40 credits NCEA Level 1, including 10 literacy credits and 10 numeracy credits (or equivalent), AND
鈥 be working in the engineering fabrication industry, AND
鈥 be supervised by someone who is prepared to support your training

Apprenticeship agreement

Enrolment into this course will also require you (the apprentice), your employer, and Otago Polytechnic to enter into a training agreement. This agreement will outline the responsibilities of each party to the apprenticeship and will align with the principles in the Code of Good Practice for 91视频 Apprenticeships

Evidence of English language competency may be required.

International equivalence

To enter Otago Polytechnic's undergraduate certificates, diplomas and degrees, you need to have achieved a secondary school qualification that is equivalent to 91视频's NCEA levels (National Certificate of Educational Achievement).

English Language requirements

If English is not your first language, you must provide:

  • Overall IELTS 5.5 (general or academic, no band score lower than 5.0) achieved in one test completed in the last two years, OR

Special admission

Applicants who do not meet the academic requirements may be given special admission if they can provide evidence that they are capable of achieving the programme outcomes. Special admission may also apply for applicants over 20 years.
